Materials Needed
The materials your child will need for sewing school are as follows:
-Fabric scissors (Fiskars is a good brand)
-Seam ripper
-Hand sewing needle set (will come in a little round plastic case- may say craft needles)
-Box of straight pins
-Chalk pencil
-Ruler
-Extra set of "universal" machine needles (that is the type, the brand doesn't matter)
-Extra bobbins- about 5
-White thread, at least 250m- I use Gutermann
-These supplies can be bought locally at Fabricland, Lens Mill or Michaels.
Sewing machine. Your child will need his/her own sewing machine. A used, older machine would be perfect, although buying a new one is good too. We will only need basic functions, including a zig-zag stitch, button hole maker, zipper foot and you may want a couple of decorate stitches, but they are not necessary. A child's machine will be easy to use and may be sturdy. However, if your child will continue sewing for awhile, a standard machine from a reputable brand (Kenmore, Singer, Janome, Bernina, etc.) may be a better choice. I buy and maintain my machines at KW Sewing in the Frederick Mall. Feel free to ask me any questions about what machine to buy.
